Procedure FAQs

What should I eat the day before my colonoscopy?

Stay on a clear liquid diet (but no red or purple colored liquids). Examples of a clear liquid diet include: jello, plain broth, gatorade, clear juice, black coffee or tea (without milk or cream), clear sodas, crystal light. Alcohol is not allowed as part of the liquid diet as it is dehydrating and not recommended prior to sedation.

What is a colonoscopy/bowel prep and why do I need it?

The most important part of a colonoscopy is to be able to see the interior lining of your colon. It is extremely important to have a “clean” colon. The bowel prep is a type of laxative that will cause the colon to empty all of the stool so that your physician can see within your colon. You will receive complete colonoscopy prep instructions when you make your colonoscopy appointment.

What should I do if I am throwing up my colonoscopy prep?

Take a break for about 30-60 minutes, and then restart drinking the prep at a slower rate. You can also try refrigerating the prep and drinking the prep through a straw.
